Quiet Piano Music Lowers Stress in Rats

Just found this interesting study from Japan. Now I have scientific proof that playing New Age piano can assist in your health. Here's the article:

Quiet piano music helps ease stress in rats, according to a recent study that found blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity drop sharply in rats exposed to Robert Schumann's "Traumerei."

The study proves the effectiveness of music therapy, claimed Katsuya Nagai, a professor emeritus at Osaka University who led the team that conducted the study. About 70 rats were used for the experiment.

The rats were exposed to "Traumerei" and other sounds for an hour at a time. Blood pressure and nerve activity were gauged before and after each exposure through electrodes attached to the sympathetic nerve in the rats' kidneys.

Nerve activity dropped as much as 32 percent and blood pressure as much as 12 percent after the soft piano piece, the researchers said.

But nerve activity and blood pressure changed little after the rats were subjected to other noises or to passionate piano tunes.

Nagai said he will continue to study what kind of music soothes the sympathetic nerve system of rats and ultimately humans, who he says exhibit similar reactions to odors and light

New Age Piano Sheet Music

New Age piano is a genre where you'd expect to find a lot of sheet music right? Wrong. Sure, there's New Age folios by David Lanz and Micheal Jones .. but they're not free.

I on the other hand have 9 free easy/intermediate level pieces ready for your enjoyment. They were created using Finale Notepad and only very simple ideas.

Find the sheet music at http://solosheets.blogspot.com

George Winston Answers 11 Questions

Just found this interesting article where New Age pianist/composer George Winston talks about his composing "process."

I remember when I first started out desperately wanting any information on how someone creates a complete musical composition. Winston's interview in Rolling Stone magazine had an interesting tidbit. Winston says ... "I get the left hand down. It's like the band - the rhythm section if you will. Then the right hand does it's thing (improvises) and gets freer and freer."

Website Redesign - Phase Two Complete

Well, I finally did it. And I've been wanting to do this for a long time now. All lessons are now unified and on the new template.

It actually was a lot of work because of the keyboard diagrams. But it was worth it. Now I'm going to work on adding some new member features to make it a more "cozy" place.

Any suggestions?

Website Redesign - Phase One Complete

Hi everyone,

Well, I've got the major pages of the website redesigned with the new "nature themed" template. The next part of the plan is to convert all the lesson onto the new template. This should be done no later than Thursday.

Recommended Listening - The Music Of Yosemite

The Music of Yosemite by Rick Erlien is a CD everyone interested in New Age piano should listen to. Why? Because Rick has a very unique style.

In fact, the whole story behind this album is interesting. Rick took a portable keyboard with him as he backpacked into Yosemite. He composed all the music for the CD at location! Pretty cool.

You can actually watch a video of Rick performing some of his music at YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5N1fWWkenc
