Composer's Journal

Well, I haven't been as steadfast at the piano as I would like. But, my goal of spending a half-hour at the piano (whether anything comes or not) is working out.

Some people work better with task goals where you have to complete a certain thing in a certain amount of time.

I don't work as well that way. For some things, but not for creating music. I find it much easier to just "show up" at the piano for at least 30 minutes a day and work that way.

In fact, I just finished a piece I've been working. My method is to basically come up with 8-12 pieces first. I then choose the one's I want for the CD and put them in order. The rest of the time is spent "polishing" them up for performance.

I don't know if I'll reach my goal of having a finished CD by February 08 but setting a goal does seem to push me along.

  1. I like the idea of having a set amount of time daily at the piano. my goal, however, is just to do SOMETHING in terms of music, which might only be to listen to a CD of someone whose style I like to see what ideas I can get. this is due to time constraints, but if I can do something daily I feel like I am progressing at least incrementally.
